Pregnant Women - Tips For The First Trimester

The first trimester is classified as the period of pregnancy from conception up to the 13th week.

Although the mum-to-be may well not even look pregnant during the first trimester and should gain only 1-2kg (2-4lbs), this is a period of huge growth for the embryo.

Of the weight gained, about 48g (1.7oz) will be the baby, the rest is made up from the baby's support system (placenta, amniotic fluid), enlarged uterus and breasts and increased blood volume.

In the first trimester pregnancy hormones will affect different women in different ways. Some will have strong mood swings, others an increased libido, others will have a bigger appetite while some will be nauseous and manage to eat only small amounts of bland food.

During these first weeks of pregnancy a woman's body works very hard to nurture the growing embryo and placenta.

She will have an increased metabolic rate with cardiac output increasing significantly and raising the heartbeat. Breathing gets more rapid as her body sends more oxygen to the embryo. She will most likely feel extremely tired and need to cat nap during the day.

A woman's breasts develop becoming fuller and usually tender to the touch. It's important to wear a good supporting bra to prevent discomfort and stretching.

As the uterus grows it will press upon the bladder (until it rises higher in the pelvis in the second trimester) meaning the woman will have the urge to pee more often.

It is very important in this first trimester to eat a healthy diet rich in all the necessary nutrients and a good supply of protein and carbohydrates.

It's also very important to drink lots of water (a minimum of eight glasses a day) avoiding caffeine, junk food, alcohol, drugs and cigarettes.

During the first trimester it's important to keep comfortable, wearing clothes that do not feel constricting or tight. Most couples do not share their pregnancy news until the start of the second trimester and wearing looser clothing will help disguise any growing waistline!

More tips for the first trimester:

Focus on yourself and your relaxation.

Prioritize and do only what is needed to be done.

Enjoy this quiet time before baby arrives. Spend some quality time with your partner.

Involve others: Your partner, family and friends will understand what you are going through (morning sickness, difficulty adjusting) and can lend moral support if you communicate with them.

Don't listen to negative stories. Most pregnancies and births go smoothly.

Ask for help: Friends and family will probably be only too happy to help out.

Get informed: Pregnancy and baby care websites are a great source of useful info at your fingertips.

Enjoy: First Trimester is a very special time of your life. Try to enjoy it!

Factors Affecting the Chances of Getting Pregnant

Having a baby or planning for a baby is one of the happy occasions that many couples look forward to. Yet there are several couples, both men and women around the world have problems with infertility. Numerous factors are there that affect the fertility or may be reduced or increased a woman's chances of getting pregnant.

If you are trying to get pregnant now or planning to in the future, maintaining good health or making wise lifestyle choices can improve the likelihood of having a baby. You should schedule an appointment with your doctor to discuss your health and your partner's health, the sooner you detect and treat the issues that may affect your chances of conceiving, the better your chances of achieving a successful pregnancy. Allowing problems to go untreated and attempting to conceive can make conception difficult, if not possible.

Several people think the more you have unprotected intercourse the better your chances of getting pregnant. To some extent, this may be true as you are more likely to have sex at right time. Timing is one of the factors that can affect your chances of getting pregnant. Every month ovulation is to happen at a specific time and the right time to have intercourse is during or near the time of ovulation.

In addition lifestyle factors are there that can decrease the chances to get pregnant. If either partner smokes, it may be more difficult to have a successful pregnancy. Taking recreational drugs and use of alcohol or tobacco can also have a negative impact. On the other side, nutrition plays a vital role in improving the chances of conceiving. Women who maintain a healthy diet during or before pregnancy, rarely have difficulty getting pregnant than those who are malnourished. Other general health factors such as being overweight, being underweight, having a hormonal imbalance, being exposed to occupational or environmental hazards, having an autoimmune disorder and exposure to toxic substance can also affect your chances of getting pregnant.

It may be difficult for you to conceive if you contracted certain sexually transmitted diseases in the past or are currently affected. Your medical history plays a great role in achieving a successful pregnancy, so it is important to tell your doctor right away about your past medical issues including a history of multiple miscarriage, painful menstrual cycles requires pain relief and abnormal Pap smears that have result in surgeries.

For a while, birth control pills may also reduce your chances of getting pregnant. Even though you may have stopped treatment course when decided to conceive, it is possible that effects may linger. Additionally age generally impacts fertility. As you get older, your chances of having a baby reduces i.e. once you reach 35, your conception chances begin to drop. Genetic factors may also have an effect on your efforts such as woman with healthy fertile background family or whose parents or grandparents were highly fertile may conceive much easier in comparison to the women whose predecessors had difficulty in conceiving.

Why Are Some Pregnant Women Afraid of Natural Deliveries?

The percentage of women having caesareans rather than spontaneous, vaginal deliveries, has grown in recent years. In the UK around 20% of births are now c-sections and not just for medical reasons.

These 'elective' caesareans are supposed to be an option if a pregnant woman has already had an emergency one in a previous pregnancy, or if it might be difficult or dangerous for her to delivery naturally.

There is no corresponding evidence regarding the medical necessity for this increase, meaning more surgeons are clearly being persuaded to arrange them without medical reason.

So why are more women afraid of natural spontaneous deliveries and asking for caesareans?

Pain

Caesareans are seen by many pregnant women as the painless way to give birth. Many women worry they'll be unable to cope with the pain of a spontaneous vaginal delivery. But with modern pain relief options contractions can be made much more bearable. Also the recovery time for a vaginal birth is usually quicker than a caesarean which is a surgical procedure and brings with it risks of infection, haemorrhaging and other potentially serious conditions.

Choosing the date

Mums choosing caesareans may be able to select a date to fit their family plans, but is it fair to the baby to force his arrival just for the parents or surgeons convenience?

The fear of after effects

Some pregnant women think a c-section prevents damage to their pelvic floor during delivery, so they'll be free from the risks of a weak bladder later. Others worry that their vagina will stretch and sex will become less pleasurable in future.

The pelvic floor muscles come under pressure throughout the third trimester so having a caesarean may not prevent problems. It is true that some stress urinary incontinence can be caused by the stretching of muscles during natural childbirth thus causing a leakage of urine when coughing, sneezing or laughing.

But carrying out gentle, regular pelvic floor exercises is the best way to prevent future bladder weakness problems.

The vagina will go back into shape after giving birth. The perineum (the area of skin between the vagina and anus) may be cut or tear in labour, but this too will repair.

Unfortunately stories by woman about ruined sex lives, sore stitches and haemorrhoids only send more women running to tick the caesarean request box.

Other reasons why women should think twice before selecting a caesarean:

Some women say they missed that feeling of achievement. Others say the process of vaginal delivery is key for bonding.Around 35 in 1000 c-section babies have breathing difficulties compared to 5 in 1000 after a natural birth.A woman is four times more likely to die as a result of a caesarean than from a vaginal birth. The wound of a caesarean can be uncomfortable for weeksSome women are left with an unsightly flap of skin above their scar which later requires cosmetic surgery.Debra Aspinall is an experienced journalist and the editor and leading writer for the Emma's Diary website, one of the UKs foremost pregnancy and baby websites. Best Position To Get Pregnant

Do you want to get pregnant faster? Then, you're like lots of women that just want to have that little baby pop out so they can start their families and move on with their lives. There are sometimes roadblocks along the way though.

First, do a checkup prior to conception. Ask a doctor about folic acid or prenatal vitamins which will help protect the body against some kinds of birth defects, like spina bifida, for example. Folic acid will be useful during the beginning stages of pregnancy, so that is why it's critical to make certain that you're getting enough folic acid before you ever get pregnant. Do this in the cycle before you begin trying. If you have any medical problems that are underlying, you need to take care of those before you can become pregnant safely.

You need to get to know your cycle too. You have to find out how much you know about your menstrual cycle. If you really understand, you will know when you are most fertile. The best time to get pregnant is during ovulation. That is definitely the time to focus on when you should be having sex. You need to become very aware of the signs of ovulation, like any kind of change in the mucus around your cervix. It will usually become slippery and thin when you are at your most fertile. Some women can also feel a twinge of pain that's one-sided.

It's really important to step up your sex prior to ovulation. Once you pick up on some kind of hormonal surge going on, you need to have sex on that day, and you need to have sex in the couple of days afterward too. Cervical mucus will be at its optimum so that sperm can travel up to the egg easier and break apart the shell-like coating.

Sperm can even live inside the uterus for one or two days, and that means that there will be a lot to meet the egg there once ovulation begins.

One more reason to have sex prior to the time that you ovulate, instead of the day that it happens, is because an egg can survive for just 12 to 24 hours once ovulation is overwith, so if you start to ovulate int he morning and then wait until night to have sex, the egg could lose its viability once the sperm travels to it. Cervical mucus will begin to become impenetrable and thick once ovulation begins too, and that will make it a lot more hostile to sperm.

The last tip is to just enjoy yourself. The most critical thing in sex is to have fun. It's not good to look at sex as just a chore on your to-do list.

These tips should get you and your partner on the right track to conceiving in no time at all. You won't have to wait around for months to get the pregnancy that you've both been hoping for. It's time to put the right tips from science to use and not just hope to conceive randomly.
